Binalonan, the Hidden Jewel of the Crossroads

“All that is gold does not glitter… Sometimes you just have to look closer to see their real magnificence”….

Some beautiful paths can’t be discovered without the longing heart of a traveler, and sometimes these paths are even more beautiful than already known travel ends. This is the story of finding the gem hidden in the crossroads known as Luzon’s gateway of the North and South.

You probably have heard about Binalonan or passed by the said town while going down to Southern parts of Luzon like Manila or while travelling to the highlands like Baguio City. But ever thought of stopping by the town for the sake of discovering its splendour? Well you definitely should.

Binalonan is located on the eastern part of the province of Pangasinan. The 8,400-hectare municipality is bordered on the north by the municipalities of Pozorrubio and Sison, on the south by Urdaneta, on the east by San Manuel and Asingan and on the west by Laoac.

Binalonan is a first-class municipality that consists of 24 barangays. It is known as one of the premier producers of sugar cane, corn, rice, feeds, cornik, basi or tuba, as well as ornamental plants and earthen pots. It is also a must to try the Binalongganisa or Binalonan’s own version of the popular native sausage that is traditionally made with ground pork seasoned with a Binalonian’s unique blend of herbs and spices. Binalonan longganisa is meatier because makers would remove the fat from the meat before mixing it with spices. It has a garlicky taste that is best paired with fried rice for breakfast.

It’s very easy to go around the town of Binalonan because every destination is just a tricycle away. In almost every corner of the municipal hall as well as the Binalonan junction, you will be greeted by the cordial smiles of manong tricycle drivers asking you where you want to go.

You know you’ve reached the “Most Beautiful and Cleanest Philippine Town” when you inhale the warm and clean airs of Binalonan. It’s not an exaggeration when someone says that there is not a single litter in the streets of this illusorily quiet town. The scent of burning leaves, rice paddies and corn fields typically dissipate through the whole town which gives it the comfortable feel of home away from home.
